<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Certainly right now they allow hotlinking direct to the content (that link's 59MB BTW, but looks like fun). Also archive.org have a caching architecture in place etc, and you can also assign a non-ambiguous license to your work. The only way you could lose by using archive.org is if they get shutdown for some reason or somebody suddenly switches the internet off.

However, for a certain demigraphic it's a lot easier to slap in a DVD and watch it than download and roll your own.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Wow, that's pretty freaking awesome. Do you think it would be worth us doing both? A DVd and then a small site of links to our works?

I'm pretty keen to do something this time around.

well, there's nothing stopping anyone from using archive.org right now ... it's a totally free sign-up. Might be worth using an 'exposure' keyword in the metadata when stuff gets uploaded.

My theory is that we could capitalise on the 'eXposure' moniker so that anybody who wants to know more has a community to gravitate to rather than wandering the wasteland alone.

Perhaps the submission process for eXposure shorts should be an upload to archive.org and then if a 56k'er wants to see stuff on DVD they can make a request at the website (or this board).

    Decisions decisions ....

fuck yea i had an amazing thought earlier.

a way to actually make money on your own short films.

Ok here's what my idea was so far:

We make the site, something like shortfilms.com. We pay for the brandwith or get our own server. And everyone can upload their short film - but they have to pay money for it.

Here's the catch. Each film gets rated between 1 to 5 stars. If a MR Spielberg would submit a short, pay his 5 to 10 dollars it's not all done yet - he'd have to 'bet' on how many stars every user would rate his film. If he'd put all his money on an average rating of 4 stars, and after 1000(just a number) votes his rating would actually BE 4 stars then he'd get his 5 to 10 dollars back, multiplied by a certain something.

The more stars you get, the more money you make. You can't lose any more money than the money you spend on uploading your short.

Also, you can upload a crap movie, and bet on it getting one star. And it would get one star after 1000 votes. But because all kinds of rules this cant happen.

Sorry guys, still have to figure lots of stuff out as you can see. However, I hope you can see the core. Maybe some feedback on this?

Oh, and one dollar goes to the brandwith thing.

Lots of loose ends, really. I'll try to think of something more ... finished.

The thing is, there's loads of similar sites out there already that will charge a moviemaker for the honour of hosting his/her movie. Right now there seems to be a glut of service providers and an ever shrinking pool of quality content. Service providers should pay the moviemakers for their content, not the other way around IMO. With that business model, your content should be worth paying for. I agree that eXposure should not be run as a loss making charity however. Much better to do everthing 'for free', get your visits per day up there and rely on advertising revenue from google to host the site?

That's what I like about the DVD concept - you could offer it as a 'free' ad supported 4GB download or a paid-for tangible product.

I remember how mp3.com used to have a scheme called Payback for Playback - which encouraged unknown bands to upload their music and promote it... hence more hits for mp3.com, and more 'exposure' for advertisers!

The payout was really low though, something like 1 cent per download... but over time, well, you get the idea!

Not sure if they are still doing that, but there is probably some other site doing it... I'd be surprised if atomfilm or undergroundfilm (or someone else) hasn't already done this!

On an interesting note, eXposure has been around for nearly 10 years now... a LOT of people have heard of it and respect it - thats a great basis for this shortfilms project.

I think that's a good plan Miker, sort of have everyone under the Exposure umbrella while still retaining our individual companies/names.

Definately the way to go in my opinion. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

What was the kind of uptake/distribution on the first three? Just curious to know how much "exposure" (couldn't avoid that) it actually got because all I could find was this.

How many people bought/requested the DVD who weren't contributors or posters on this message board?

    Just curious.
